Business Admin EPAO

A Business Administration End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) is an approved company that is responsible for providing end point assessment for apprenticeships in the field of business administration. As an EPAO in the business administration sector, we will ensure that apprentices meet the required standards and competencies outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standards.

Business Administration EPAOs are specialised organisations responsible for conducting assessments to evaluate the competencies and developing skills of business administration apprentices. These assessments help ensure that business administration apprenticeships are rigorous and relevant, ultimately benefiting both apprentices and the business administration industry as a whole. You can find out more about EPAOs here.

What Does EPA involve for Business Admin?

The end point assessment, or EPA, for the Business Admin standard is made up of three components:

  1. Knowledge test
  2. Portfolio-based interview
  3. Project presentation

EPA 1: Knowledge test

The first part of EPA is the business admin level 3 knowledge test. The knowledge test is carried out online and contains 50 multiple-choice questions randomly selected from 1st for EPA’s question bank. Apprentices will have 60 minutes to complete the test.

EPA 2: Portfolio-based interview

Apprentices will undertake a portfolio-based interview which will be carried out by video call and will last 30-45 minutes. This interview is based on the portfolio of learning that the apprentice creates while on the programme. This portfolio should evidence each of the knowledge, skills and behaviours shown in the assessment plan.

EPA 3: Project presentation

Finally, the apprentice will deliver a presentation on a project they completed or a process they improved. The project presentation should last 10-15 minutes, with a further 10-15 minutes given for a Q&A session. The project or process improvement will be done while the apprentice is on the programme, from month 9 of their apprenticeship, and should be completed prior to the gateway.

The project should be submitted to 1st for EPA, and the apprentice will then be given a question to answer in the presentation. For example:

  • How have you improved a process or operating practice?
  • What were the steps you took to implement the project?
  • What worked well, and how would you improve the results in future?

The EPA elements for Business Administrators are equally weighted. Full guidance will be provided by 1st for EPA for the business administration apprenticeship standard.

    What does Business Administration Include?

Business administration apprenticeships are an excellent choice for individuals seeking a career path with plenty of opportunity and room for growth. A business admin role means managing the resources, time and people within an organisation or business and essentially carrying out any administration work that ensures the smooth running of the business.

Business admin roles can also be hugely varied, from education centres to doctors’ offices and everything in-between. However, the skills learned in a business administration apprenticeship are adaptive and key for any workplace.

What is an End Point Assessment?

An end point assessment, otherwise known as an EPA, is the final stage of an apprenticeship programme. The apprentice must undertake and pass their EPA to receive an apprenticeship certificate and qualification. The assessment process is essential as it ensures the apprentice has developed the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours outlined in the business administration apprenticeship standard.

How Long Does a Business Admin Level 3 Apprenticeship Take?

Typically, a business administrator level 3 apprenticeship has a duration of between 12 and 18 months. However, this can vary based on the apprenticeship provider and business. The business administration level 3 standard end point assessment has a maximum timescale of three months.

Business Administrator EPAOs are instrumental in maintaining the quality and relevance of business administrator apprenticeships. They design and conduct assessments that verify the competency of apprentices. Their specialised expertise in business administration ensures that apprentices are well-prepared for a wide range of administrative roles in various industries.

How does EPA work?

  • The training provider recommends an EPAO, often with input from the employer.

  • The training provider registers the apprentice with the EPAO, giving an expected date for EPA.

  • The apprentice completes Gateway and schedules their EPA.

  • 1st for EPA provides full support and guidance to help the apprentice prepare for EPA.

  • EPA is carried out with a qualified assessor.

  • 1st for EPA carries out quality checks, then emails the apprentice their results and claims their completion certificate from the ESFA.
