What does EPA involve for IT Solutions Technician?

The end point assessment, or EPA, for the IT Solutions Technician standard is made up of two components:

  1. Knowledge Test
  2. Project and Interview (with portfolio)

EPA1: Knowledge Test

The knowledge test is split into four units. All apprentices will undertake Unit 1 Methodologies and Principles, Unit 2 Core Technical IT Knowledge, and Unit 4 Security and Legislation. For unit 3, apprentices can choose the appropriate option: Software or Hardware.

All questions are multiple choice and the tests are taken online.

EPA 2: Project and Interview (with portfolio)

A portfolio of evidence should be submitted at gateway. Apprentices will carry out a business-related project, before undergoing the 90-minute interview with the 1st for EPA assessor. The interview will assess the apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours which will be demonstrated across the project and the portfolio.

1st for EPA provides guidance, including how to prepare, and giving example questions.


IT Solutions Technician EPAO

IT Solutions Technician apprentices develop, implement and maintain complete IT solutions such as networks, operating systems and applications. This includes hardware infrastructure (such as servers and networks) and software (such as operating systems, middleware and applications).

IT Solutions apprentices tackle core duties as well as an option: IT Hardware Solutions Technician or IT Software Solutions Technician. The end point assessment has these same options.

Typical job titles for apprentices in this role include IT Solutions Technician, Service Analyst, and Junior Systems Analyst.

  • Remote EPA

    Remote EPA for IT Solutions Technician

    1st for EPA carry out EPA for the IT Solutions Technician apprenticeship remotely. We use video calling so end point assessment can take place from anywhere in England, at a time and date to suit the apprentice.

    As soon as apprentices are registered with us, they receive access to our portal. This contains guidance, videos and the Resource Pack. We add transparency to the EPA process, supporting apprentices and providers.

    We also offer out of hours EPA on request.

  • The training provider recommends an EPAO, often with input from the employer.

  • The training provider registers the apprentice with the EPAO, giving an expected date for EPA.

  • The apprentice completes Gateway and schedules their EPA.

  • 1st for EPA provides full support and guidance to help the apprentice prepare for EPA.

  • EPA is carried out with a qualified assessor.

  • 1st for EPA carries out quality checks, then emails the apprentice their results and claims their completion certificate from the ESFA.
