Launch of Machine Learning Apprenticeship to be Industry Game Changer

The world is on the cusp of an AI revolution, and the new Machine Learning Engineer Level 6 apprenticeship is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of the tech industry. This apprenticeship is now available for new starts, and it could be key to putting apprenticeships front and centre stage when it comes to the UK leading tech innovation.

What is the Machine Learning Engineer Apprenticeship?

Machine learning is an application of AI that allows machines to extract knowledge from data and learn from it autonomously. The Machine Learning Engineer apprenticeship standard is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills required to develop and implement machine learning models and solutions. Apprentices will learn to design, develop, and deploy machine learning models, gaining a deep understanding of data structures, algorithms and modelling techniques. They’ll also develop the skills to evaluate and optimise the performance of these models.

Benefits to Employers

So, why should employers be interested in this apprenticeship? The answer lies in the rapidly growing demand for skilled machine learning professionals. By recruiting a Machine Learning Engineer apprentice, employers can:

  • Develop in-house expertise in using machine learning solutions effectively
  • Find innovative and efficient ways to meet organisational goals
  • Be an early adopter of machine learning solutions, using  these to gain a competitive edge.

And, as with all apprenticeships, employers have the intrinsic benefit of moulding their apprentice into a professional who understands the specific needs and goals of their business.

Benefits to Training Providers

For training providers, delivering this apprenticeship standard presents a fantastic opportunity to expand their portfolio and offer a standard in a sector that is set to skyrocket.

Set at level 6, with a £22,000 funding band and typical duration of 24 months, the standard has appeal across limitless industries and sectors. For providers already delivering in the digital sector, Machine Learning Engineer can be used as a progression route for several standards such as Data Analyst, Data Engineer and Software Developer.

A level 7 apprenticeship in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Specialist is currently live and could be used as a progression route for Machine Learning Engineer. However, the uncertainty around the government’s plans to remove funding for a significant number of level 7 apprenticeships could thwart such plans.
