1st for EPA is an end point assessment organisation – we provide the final (end point) assessment for apprentices throughout England. We’re customer focused, with a quality-centred approach.

The HR Manager position is a newly created role in our team. It gives the opportunity for a HR generalist to join a small yet fast-growing business and lead on HR initiatives as the company grows. The role involves managing all aspects of HR, though there will be a particular focus on performance management.

The HR Manager has responsibility for human resources responsibilities within 1st for EPA. They will be able to lead and direct HR initiatives, making the role their own and growing with the business.

They must be able to work independently and under their own directive, finding areas for improvement and implementing appropriate policies and HR systems.

They will champion the company values, demonstrating a high-performance ethic with a focus on successful outcomes.

Job duties

  • Performance management: Inspire a high performance culture amongst our 19 staff. Coach, mentor, and support colleagues to identify individual strengths and development needs. Monitor KPIs. Motivate colleagues to develop to their full potential. Support line managers with performance reviews.
  • Learning & development: Identify L&D needs, advise on training, oversee and monitor staff CPD.
  • HR policy and process: Look for efficiencies and improvements in existing HR practices and policies. Build on existing HR initiatives. Advise on and update relevant documentation such as staff handbook. Future proof the company to support growth.
  • HR legislation: Ensure company compliance with relevant HR and employment legislation and regulation, including legislation on data protection, the Equality Act and health and safety.
  • Staff and recruitment: Assist with recruitment initiatives. Carry out staff on-boarding and off-boarding duties.
  • Advice: Provide advice and direction on HR matters, in accordance with legislation/regulation.
  • Advise and lead on HR matters such as employee benefits, annual leave, disciplinaries, hearings, representing the company.
  • HR systems: recommend, manage and monitor HR systems and software.
  • Data: Use data to inform HR activity and performance management.
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate HR records and data.

Person specification

Experience & qualifications

Essential:

  • Experience in a HR role – 3 years
  • Experience in performance management – 2 years
  • HR qualification at level 5 or above, such as an apprenticeship, degree or professional body qualification (e.g. CIPD).

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a regulated environment or awarding body.
  • Experience in people management.
  • Professional body membership, e.g. CIPD.

The role is home based and can be worked from anywhere in the UK. Travel to Teesside/Darlington is required for team meetings. This will be no more than once per month.
